Deborah Major: A Beacon of Hope at Fight Bladder Cancer

Published on 19 March 2024

Deborah Major has resigned from her role as a trustee of Fight Bladder Cancer to focus more on her health and her family.

Despite stepping down, We are grateful that Deborah’s commitment to Fight Bladder Cancer and our aims remains strong, and that she will continue her invaluable work hosting the Southampton bladder cancer support group and the Bournemouth May Awareness Walk, in addition to maintaining her vital role as a bladder buddy.

Deb’s personal experience with bladder cancer since 2012 led her to Fight Bladder Cancer, transforming her from a seeker of support to a pillar of strength for others. Serving as a Trustee from 11 October 2015 until 11 March 2024, Deb’s journey with us has been remarkable. Her tenure as Vice Chair from 1 April 2016 to 11 February 2023, and subsequently as Interim Chair from 11 February 2023 to 3 July 2023, were periods of profound impact and growth for our charity.

As a lecturer at Brockenhurst College, Deb brought her expertise in education and her passion for innovation to our charity, creating engaging and informative videos to share. Her leadership in organising events such as the Fight Bladder Cancer Southern Soirée, the Southampton bladder cancer support group, and the Bournemouth May Awareness Walk have raised awareness and fostered a sense of community among those affected by bladder cancer.

Deb’s tenure was marked by both achievements and challenges. The sudden loss of John Hester, Chair of Fight Bladder Cancer, in February 2023 was a profound loss for our community. Deb’s willingness to step up as Interim Chair during this difficult time showcased her dedication. Under her leadership, we navigated through challenges, working to review our strategies and explore new opportunities. Deb’s focus on enhancing our digital platforms to increase visibility and support is a legacy that will continue to drive our mission forward.

Andrew Dearden, Chair of Trustees, said: “As we move forward, inspired by Deb’s dedication, Fight Bladder Cancer remains committed to its mission. With the support of our donors, volunteers, and partners, we continue to strive towards a future where bladder cancer is better known, and those affected by it receive the care they deserve.”

To Deb: thank you for everything. Your contributions have not only shaped Fight Bladder Cancer but have also touched the lives of countless individuals facing bladder cancer. You have been a beacon of hope and leadership; we are eternally grateful.
