Communications Volunteer

Volunteer role
Part-time, ideally 5-15 per week, but open to discussion for the best candidate. Applicants are welcome to set out their preferred working hour requirements.

Home-based

Do you want to help fight bladder cancer?

Fight Bladder Cancer is a small patient-led charity with a big impact. We are an enthusiastic and friendly team who work together to ensure that everyone affected by bladder cancer – patients, carers, family, and friends – have a place to come to for support, information, and advice. We were founded by Andrew and Tracy, a bladder cancer patient and his wife, from their garden shed. We need your help to ensure our charity can reach more people than ever.

This role is home-based and is open to any eligible person living anywhere in the UK.

Most of us work 9:00am-4:30pm from Monday to Thursday. You are welcome to set out your preferred working hour requirements (anything between 5 to 15 hours per week), and we have a weekly team meeting from 3:00pm-3:45pm every Tuesday that we ask everyone to join remotely via Zoom.

Are you passionate about social media? Do you want to use it to bring people together? Our communications have a bright and friendly feel – we remind people affected by bladder cancer that they are not alone. Check us out at @BladderCancerUK on Twitter, and see if we are a good match for you.

We are looking for a volunteer to help us manage and grow our social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and possibly TikTok. You will collaborate with our friendly team to develop compelling messages, and a professional graphic designer will assist you to create images using Canva. You will work with our team to drive Bladder Cancer Awareness Month in May, working with the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition. You will support our team in producing communication outputs, including press releases, our monthly MailChimp newsletter, updates to our WordPress website, and our Fight magazine. You will work with our team to tell patients and nurses about our patient information booklets, support groups, and free magazine, and keep track of these people using our Salesforce database.

You will be working remotely with Lydia (our Chief Executive), Vicky (our Communications Coordinator), Melanie (our Support Services Manager and a bladder cancer patient), Sana (our Policy and Communications Manager), Amy (our Supporter Care & Community Engagement Officer), and Sue (our Office Manager).

Once we have you all trained up, we would love your ideas for helping the charity become more effective, designing new social media campaigns, writing for our magazine, modernising our website, improving our processes, and expanding our digital presence to additional platforms like TikTok.

Why volunteer for Fight Bladder Cancer?

This is a great opportunity to gain work experience, and will allow you to build a marketing and social media communication portfolio.

We work to ensure that everyone affected by bladder cancer – patients, carers, family and friends – has a place to come to for support, information and advice and ensure that someone is speaking up for them when key decisions are made about policy, care and research.

We continue to work hard delivering the legacy of Andrew Winterbottom, a determined bladder cancer patient who saw the lack of patient leadership for bladder cancer in the UK and worked with his wife to form this charity from their garden shed in 2009. The charity has continued to grow its footprint and is reaching more patients, family-members, healthcare professionals than ever before. Consequently, the charity has a growing need for voluntary income to achieve its ambitions.

The Communications Volunteer has a vital role in ensuring our mission becomes a reality.
